Information Regarding Homelessness & the McKinney-Vento Act

HOMELESS EDUCATION

Lunenburg County Public Schools provide educational service to children per the federal McKinney-Vento Act which guarantees school enrollment to any child who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence due to a lack of housing and lives:

  • doubled up with more than one family in the home due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reason

  • in a motel due to the lack of an adequate alternative

  • in a shelter or transitional housing

  • in a location not designed for sleeping accommodations (e.g. car, park, campsite) or inadequate

    housing

Homeless children face multiple challenges and barriers to success in school. Lunenburg County Public Schools work to place homeless students in school immediately.

If you are or know of a homeless student, please contact Stacey Newton, Homeless Coordinator, at  (434) 696-3036 or email at stacey.newton@k12lcps.org.
