Lunenburg and Nottoway Gifted students in grades 2nd through 5th participated in a Market Day event on March 28, 2024. This event was held at the Victoria Fire and Rescue Station in Kenbridge.
During this semester each student decided on a product that they would create. The students were put into groups and came up with a name for their business and their products. Students created products such as piggy banks from recycled bottles, photo holders, stress balls, pom pom launchers, rock coasters, galaxy bottles, croc charms, jewelry, magnets, slime, pencil holders, and many more.
During this event the students were given the opportunity to buy and sell. They really enjoyed the whole experience. While the “market” was in action judges walked around and questioned students on their products, businesses, and economic concepts. The students were expected to interact with the judges and conduct themselves in a proper business-like manner. They were judged on originality, profitability, craftsmanship, and advertising. All of the students did a wonderful job!
1st place went to “Poppin Rocks” from Blackstone Primary.
2nd place went to “The Golden Nuggets” from Victoria Elementary. 3rd place went to “The Panthers” from Victoria Elementary.
Prior to Market Day the students came up with designs for the currency that would be used at the event. The designs were judged and the winner of the money design was Lyla Jeter from Kenbridge Elementary. Lyla received a bag of goodies donated by Benchmark Bank.
Gifted Facilitator; Lucy Willis (Nottoway) and Gifted Teachers; Naomi Jeter and Kathy Walker (Lunenburg), would like to say a special thank you to the judges, Beverley Hawthorne (Retired Economic Developer), Tonya Rhodes (Benchmark Bank), and Stephen Day (director of the VCU Center for Economic Education).
They would also like to thank Benchmark Bank for the donation bag of goodies, Farm Bureau for the donation of shopping bags for the students to use, and the Victoria Fire and Rescue Station for allowing us to use the facility!
