At the END of the school year, we are STARTING something NEW! We have some AMAZING teachers and staff members, so we are honoring an Employee of the Month for each of our schools. This program will be in full force in the fall! INTRODUCING OUR MAY EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH: 🏆Megan Harding - Kenbridge Elementary School: Mrs. Harding has been consistent throughout this school year engaging students and prioritizing relationships within her classroom and throughout the school. Mrs. Harding is self-motivated, willing to learn continuously, and an exemplary educator. Minute by minute, each hour of every day, Mrs. Harding puts her heart and soul into being the best for her students and helping them become the best versions of who they can be. 🏆Emily Preuss-Anderson - Victoria Elementary School : Ms. PA., first year librarian at VES, has proven to be resourceful, creative, organized, and a hardworking professional. The library has become a fun and exciting place to learn and enjoy reading. The atmosphere is welcoming, and she has built positive relationships with students and her peers. She also serves at the ITRT and helps with technology needs for the school. She is a positive asset to VES. 🏆Laurie Malone - Lunenburg Middle School: Mrs. Malone was hired as the reading interventionist, however, she is willing to assist in any capacity to promote student growth at Lunenburg Middle School. She has disaggregated data for the math department even though she is the reading interventionist. She has conducted professional development for the staff and remediated students for the Civics Standards of Learning. Mrs. Malone is the epitome of excellence, and she is greatly valued at Lunenburg Middle School. 🏆Jean Jeter - Central High School: Mrs. Jean Kunath is the Art teacher at Central High School (CHS). In addition to teaching four blocks of art classes daily, she also coaches and leads various student organizations. One of the student organizations that she has sponsored is Central High School Cares or CHS Cares, established in 2007. This club allows students to join together as a school to aid in helping with local, state, national, and global disasters. The Kindness Matters Organization was formed in the fall of 2014 as a part of CHS Cares. Students meet after school and on weekends performing acts of kindness in our community. We are so thankful to Mrs. Kunath and the huge heart she has not only for our Central High School students but our entire community. She is a model and example of what it means to have the “heart of a Charger.”

An awards ceremony was held at CHS to honor the 2nd place state and 1st place VCU region stock market team for the spring competition. Parents, faculty, administration, and county officials attended the ceremony. Congratulations to Hayden Gary, Branden Smith, Isaac Newcomb, and Chace Lloyd for placing 2nd in the State Stock Market Game sponsored by the Virginia Council on Economic Education. Diane Neylan, SMG Coordinator for VA, Virginia Council on Economic Education, Kate Scott, Vice President for Programs, Virginia Council on Economic Education, and Dr. Stephen Day, Director of VCU Center for Economic Education presented the students with a certificate, a goodie bag, and $25 each in cash. They were also presented with a banner that will be displayed at the high school.

Today we say THANK YOU to our School Nurses for ALL that they do to keep our staff and students healthy and well. They are a HUGE part of our division team! if our students or staff are sick or injured, they come to the rescue! We appreciate you, Roxanne Logan, Tammy Moody, Angie Crenshaw, and Lindsey Zumbro!!

A HUGE thank you to our local NAACP for bringing these wonderful gifts of appreciation for our staff for Teacher Appreciation Week. They visited all of our schools. Thank you so much for appreciating our awesome educators!

Monday night the Lunenburg County School Board officially named Pennington Seed, Smith's Pharmacy, and Sunset Ornamental Concrete to the Virginia School Boards Association 2023 Business Honor Roll. These businesses have supported and collaborated with our schools in many ways. They have offered internships, services, and supplies and supported us in any manner needed when called upon. Karen McGrath, Career & Technical Education Coordinator, and Charles Berkley, Superintendent, presented the businesses with framed resolutions and certificates. We thank these businesses for all that they do for our students and staff. **Jahiem Callaham, CHS Student and Sunset Ornamental Concrete Intern is pictured here as well. He will be an employee at Sunset after graduation!

Mr. Tine Sledd and Mr. Alan Lenhart, Plant Managers with Parker Oil, visited students to discuss career opportunities with their company. They discussed the training programs available to students after graduation and once they turn 18 years of age. Parker Oil will pay for training at the community college for all required electrical and HVAC credentials. They will also pay for CDL and Hazmat certifications. While in school, individuals will also work to gain field experience and have a full-time job with Parker Oil after certification requirements are met. Students attending the presentation were given QR codes for the applications. These codes are also available with Mr. Buchanan and Mrs. McGrath. We thank these gentlemen for coming in to discuss these opportunities with our students!

John Hite, entrepreneur and graduate of CHS, visited Mr. Buchanan’s marketing classes to discuss entrepreneurship. He also highlighted the importance of a strong work ethic and setting goals. John also talked about learning from mistakes and never giving up on your dreams.

Congratulations to Jackson Sullivan, the May 2023 Work-Based Learning Student of the Month. Currently, Jackson is working for Hardee Ford, pursuing Ford certification as a trained, certified mechanic. He has completed the first round of online modules and will complete the face-to-face assessments after graduation. Jackson plans to be an entrepreneur one day and own his own shop.

May 2023 CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OF THE MONTH STUDENT NAME: Katherine Casoni Central High School is proud to announce our May Student of the Month, Katherine Casoni. Katherine is an 11th Grader at CHS. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art and Susan Casoni of Kenbridge, Virginia. Katherine is a current Central High School Chorus member and spends lots of time singing. She enjoyed participating in last year's school musical. Outside school and work, Katherine writes on her computer, plays games, and enjoys talking with her friends. In addition, Katherine enjoys spending time in the community and works at Sundae's. She does music specials at her church with her immediate family. Katherine does the singing, and her father is the guitarist, while her mother plays the cello, and her grandmother accompanies them on the piano. Katherine is still determining what college she wants to attend upon graduation from Central High School, but she is looking and will have a few selected soon.

Throughout our division, we use many support resources with regard to our children’s mental healthiness. Pictured here are our Character Strong books and our Skillstreaming resources that are used regularly.

This week is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. On Wednesday, May 3, we will wear green ribbons throughout the school division for Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. This awareness day was created to recognize the importance of children’s mental health and that positive mental health is essential to a child’s healthy development from birth!

Mr. Lee Smyth, Realtor® with Long and Foster Real Estate met with senior student Cesar Olmeda-Vazquez to discuss opportunities in real estate and also the importance of giving back to the community. Cesar will begin an internship at the Long and Foster office in Victoria after graduation. He would like to eventually take the real estate course and become a licensed Realtor®.
