Monday night the Lunenburg County School Board officially named Pennington Seed, Smith's Pharmacy, and Sunset Ornamental Concrete to the Virginia School Boards Association 2023 Business Honor Roll. These businesses have supported and collaborated with our schools in many ways. They have offered internships, services, and supplies and supported us in any manner needed when called upon. Karen McGrath, Career & Technical Education Coordinator, and Charles Berkley, Superintendent, presented the businesses with framed resolutions and certificates. We thank these businesses for all that they do for our students and staff. **Jahiem Callaham, CHS Student and Sunset Ornamental Concrete Intern is pictured here as well. He will be an employee at Sunset after graduation!

Mr. Tine Sledd and Mr. Alan Lenhart, Plant Managers with Parker Oil, visited students to discuss career opportunities with their company. They discussed the training programs available to students after graduation and once they turn 18 years of age. Parker Oil will pay for training at the community college for all required electrical and HVAC credentials. They will also pay for CDL and Hazmat certifications. While in school, individuals will also work to gain field experience and have a full-time job with Parker Oil after certification requirements are met. Students attending the presentation were given QR codes for the applications. These codes are also available with Mr. Buchanan and Mrs. McGrath. We thank these gentlemen for coming in to discuss these opportunities with our students!

John Hite, entrepreneur and graduate of CHS, visited Mr. Buchanan’s marketing classes to discuss entrepreneurship. He also highlighted the importance of a strong work ethic and setting goals. John also talked about learning from mistakes and never giving up on your dreams.

Congratulations to Jackson Sullivan, the May 2023 Work-Based Learning Student of the Month. Currently, Jackson is working for Hardee Ford, pursuing Ford certification as a trained, certified mechanic. He has completed the first round of online modules and will complete the face-to-face assessments after graduation. Jackson plans to be an entrepreneur one day and own his own shop.

May 2023 CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT OF THE MONTH STUDENT NAME: Katherine Casoni Central High School is proud to announce our May Student of the Month, Katherine Casoni. Katherine is an 11th Grader at CHS. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art and Susan Casoni of Kenbridge, Virginia. Katherine is a current Central High School Chorus member and spends lots of time singing. She enjoyed participating in last year's school musical. Outside school and work, Katherine writes on her computer, plays games, and enjoys talking with her friends. In addition, Katherine enjoys spending time in the community and works at Sundae's. She does music specials at her church with her immediate family. Katherine does the singing, and her father is the guitarist, while her mother plays the cello, and her grandmother accompanies them on the piano. Katherine is still determining what college she wants to attend upon graduation from Central High School, but she is looking and will have a few selected soon.

Mr. Lee Smyth, RealtorÂŽ with Long and Foster Real Estate met with senior student Cesar Olmeda-Vazquez to discuss opportunities in real estate and also the importance of giving back to the community. Cesar will begin an internship at the Long and Foster office in Victoria after graduation. He would like to eventually take the real estate course and become a licensed RealtorÂŽ.

Students visited the CITE (Center for Information Technology Excellence) at the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill. They visited an IT classroom and also the mock data center. Dr. Chad Patton, Dean of Career and Occupational Technology for SVCC, Ms. Alyssa Berryman, CITE Recruitment and Retention Manager and Ms. Laurie Michaelson, Dual Enrollment Coordinator for SVCC talked to the students about CITE, dual enrollment, internship, scholarship, and job opportunities.

This week, Mr. Buchanan's 4th block Sports and Entertainment Marketing class visited the Richmond Metro Zoo. While at the zoo, students had the assignment to determine the expenses, income, target market, and different ways the zoo advertises. The kids used this fun and exciting day away from school to learn the marketing process of a real-life entertainment business.

April is Financial Literacy Month-- In observance of Financial Literacy Month, CHS would like to share how students have the opportunity to become financially literate before graduating high school. All students must take and pass Economics and Personal Finance which teaches the importance of financial literacy. Some of the topics include exploring careers, applying for jobs, banking, savings, credit, investing, and insurance. At the end of the course, students take the W!se Financial Literacy certification which is a nationally recognized and Virginia Department of Education-approved test that measures students on all topics related to financial literacy.
